Gambino crime family boss Frank Cali shot, killed

Gambino crime family boss Frank Cali shot, killed

The reputed head of the notorious Gambino crime family was shot dead in front of his home in an upscale neighborhood on Staten Island late Wednesday.

Police confirmed the identity of Cali, who was pronounced dead at Staten Island University Hospital.

NY media reported that 53-year-old Cali was shot multiple times outside his auto on Staten Island on Wednesday evening, local time, by an unidentified man who then fled the scene in a blue vehicle.

No arrests were immediately made and police were scouring for video and looking for witnesses to the shooting, police said.

NY media say it is the first killing of a family boss in the city since the Gambino family's Paul Castellano was shot dead outside a restaurant in 1985 on the orders of John Gotti.

A panicked family member called 911, telling a dispatcher Cali was deliberately run over before he was shot, sources said.

John Gotti, who organised the hit, then took power at the helm of the Gambino family.

The last crime family boss to be shot in New York City was Paul Castellano.

Cali, who was born and raised in NY, was the nephew-in-law of John Gambino and the great-nephew of Bonanno mobsters Vito Bonventre and Giovanni Bonventre.

He had just one criminal conviction: an extortion charge in 2008 for an attempted shake down of a trucker working at a proposed NASCAR race track in Staten Island.

Authorities have claimed the 53-year-old Cali is the boss of the Gambino crime family, previously headed by the infamous John Gotti.

According to a 2008 Advance report, Cali - who also went by "Franky Boy", - was born in Brooklyn and married into the Inzerillo family of Palermo and cultivated close ties with members of the Siderno cartel in Italy.

In 2015, Cali was named boss, replacing 68-year-old Domenico Cefalu, who was forced to step down due to old age, New York Daily News and USA Today reported.

Prosecutors claimed that Cali was the Gambinos' ambassador to the Sicilian mobsters and the go-between for the two organisations.
