Google Lookout describes surroundings to visually impaired users using AI

Though Lookout is only available in the United States on Pixel devices set to English, Google "hope [s] to bring Lookout to more devices, countries and platforms soon". Now, months later, the app has been rolled out for Pixel phone users in the US. Google states that with the new Lookout app, it plans to provide their AI and Machine Learning capabilities to the almost 253 million visually impaired or blind people globally.

"Lookout uses the camera and sensors on your device to recognize objects and text, and gives you spoken feedback, earcons, and other signals to inform you about what it sees", Google explained in the Play Store description. Google says that it has been working on the app since it was unveiled past year.

Lookout is created to help people learn about new places, help reading texts and basic daily tasks such as cooking and shopping.

Bear in mind, since this is a new technology developed by Google, the results would not be 100-percent accurate; however, there's a room for improvement since Google is allowing users to share their feedback by contacting their Disability support team. There are three operation modes you can choose from, helping you "explore" your surroundings, reading barcodes and currencies for an independent "shopping" experience, and lending a hand (or rather an eye) to sort mail, as well as read signs and labels with "quick read" functionality.

Users only have to fire up the application once to use Lookout - they don't have to tap any other button in-app. And as helpful as it may be, it warns that Lookout isn't 100% ideal but, like any AI-based technology, will improve over time as it learns even from its mistakes.

To make the most of this app, Google suggest the users of Pixel devices wear the device on their neck. Share your thoughts in the comment box below and also stay tuned to PhoneRadar for more such interesting updates.
