Google patent reveals Project Stream controller

A controller for Google's new gaming platform has leaked ahead of its big GDC 2019 reveal, showing off a rather non-ergonomic peripheral that will cramp your hands.

Strangely, this then resulted in the games industry crying out "fake" at Twitter postings of the concept render.

The company could release a low-priced set-top box similar to an Ouya that plugs into TVs and plays mobile games, select AA titles, and acts as a main conduit for the Project Stream cloud streaming subscription. Now a new piece of the Stream dream falls into place thanks to a patent that shows how Google's own game controller could look like. "Yeti also includes a hardware controller that's used to play the games, developed by Google's hardware team", the report from The Information reads.

First outlined in 2014, the gamepad mostly resembles others on the market, with analog sticks, a D-pad, and the usual outlay of buttons on the front and shoulders. It's also got a central Google button (maybe that brings you to some kind of Chrome game menu, akin to Steam's Big Picture Mode?), a microphone button flawless for Google Assistant, and two basic menu buttons that can't even be called Start and Select anymore, because the industry has seemingly done away with such classic conventions forever.

Thurrott reported on the discovery of the patent application which is for a notification system between the contoller and its console counterpart. The notification may be provided by an audio and/or visual cue on the game controller.

That said, the controller itself is not the main focus of the patent.

Whatever it is, we'll find out for sure March 19.

Although the controller alone doesn't reveal much about the console, it might act as one of the most important accessories that could act as a catalyst for Google's Project Stream.

We know it's coming and now we have a little bit more insight into how Google plans to move into the gaming space.
