Google Releases Android Q Beta for Developers, Early Adopters

Android already sends out notifications for estimated remaining battery life when your charge reaches a certain threshold, but Google is incorporating these estimates even further in Android Q. If you have the battery percentage in your status bar toggled on, you'll now see how long your phone thinks your battery will last in the quick settings shade.

But in the official Android Q Beta announcement post, Google's VP of Engineering, Dave Burke, revealed that support for the update had been extended to the original Pixel series due to "popular demand". The changes aren't massive here, but the best parts of our year are playing with new versions of Android. It's also unclear if this is a Pixel-only change for Android Q or if it will affect all devices. Once enrolled, you'll "receive regular over-the-air (OTA) updates to the latest Android Q builds through (and including) the final release", Google explains. Android Q allows you to fine-tune control over location sharing; when an app asks for your location data, you can select "allow only while the app is in use" or "allow all the time". This will make it possible for apps to offer specialized blur and bokeh options.

In terms of imaging, applications can now request a Dynamic Depth image that contains metadata surrounding the elements related to depth along with a confidence map in the same file. You'll be able to control an app's access to the Photos and Videos or Audio collections using new runtime permissions, and for Downloads, apps must use the system file picker to let you decide which downloaded files the app can access.

Apps will be able to show key system settings in their own context, not having to point you to a specific part of Settings and then hope you do not forget to go back once you've enabled whichever option the app needed. Since Android Nougat, the finalized version of the OS has been published sometime in August with Android Pie having been pushed out the earliest. For example, Chrome could show shortcut buttons for adjusting settings like WiFi, airplane mode, and data without you needing to go into the Settings app. This data can also be used to create 3D images or support AR photography use cases.

To allow apps to have the most current security and performance features, Android Q will warn users when they install a new app targeting Android Marshmallow or older. What are your thoughts on the Android Q Beta 1?
