'Just one more push' to get Brexit, Britain's May urges EU

Talks will continue in Brussels but without a major breakthrough, May looks set to lose her second attempt to get lawmaker's approval and smooth Britain's exit from the European Union, its biggest shift in trade and foreign policy in more than 40 years.

Mrs May has said if the Government loses on Tuesday, there would be further votes on Wednesday on whether the United Kingdom should leave with no-deal and on Thursday on whether they should seek an extension to the Article 50 withdrawal process.

Mr Barnier said London would need to honour its commitment to keep the Irish border free of controls, potentially leaving Northern Ireland subject to European Union rules, with a "border" in the Irish Sea between Northern Ireland and the island of Britain.

In an interview with the Financial Times, he urged Tory MPs to back the Withdrawal Agreement anyway, saying it would enable him to start spending the "insurance fund" built up in case of a no-deal break.

Sir Keir: Not one word has been changed in the Withdrawal Agreement But he was gently grilled by Ridge about the fact that Labour hasn't yet tabled an amendment to force a second referendum after Labour's own vision of Brexit was rejected in the Commons.

If that happens, lawmakers will be able to vote on Wednesday and Thursday on whether they want to leave the bloc without a deal, or ask for a delay to Brexit beyond March 29 - all but wresting control of Brexit from the government. "The proposal that Michel Barnier put out yesterday would compromise the strength of the union".

He said parliament faced a choice between no deal by accident or no Brexit. British people who voted for this and a large number of Remainers who didn't vote for it but still think it should be carried through because they believe in democracy, will see a government, a parliament walking away from a question that they themselves put to the people.

That requirement has been rejected previously by London and would be particularly unpalatable to Northern Ireland's Democratic Unionist Party (DUP), which props up Mrs May's Government in Parliament and opposes any proposals for Northern Ireland to have different rules from the rest of the United Kingdom.

"With a very real deadline looming, now is not the time to rerun old arguments. We now need to agree on a balanced solution that can work for both sides", he tweeted recently.

Mrs May will hope her threat of the consequences of not supporting her deal will convince enough MPs to rally behind her. "In everything that followed there would be total uncertainty - that would be the only certainty", health minister Matt Hancock told Sky News. He said realism and a lot of work was needed from both Britain and the European Union to get a deal.

And UK Prime Minister Theresa May wants to make sure all British MPs are hearing it.
