Labour leader Corbyn to ask UK PM about progress in Brexit talks

Labour leader Corbyn to ask UK PM about progress in Brexit talks

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said Labour would be voting against it because it "risk people's living standards", jobs and the NHS.

Mrs May agreed but insisted her deal is a "good deal" and she wants the United Kingdom to leave with a good deal.

He told a press conference: "If that all happens as outlined, then we support this course of action".

At a prime minister's questions, where the prime minister again struggled with her voice, keeping her answers brief, the Labour leader began by urging May to back Wednesday evening's motion seeking to rule out no deal, in place after her plan was rejected the previous night.

Sarah Newton, a junior work and pensions minister, resigned after defying the prime minister to block a no-deal exit.

"We have agreed a deal with the prime minister, and the European Union is ready to sign it".

Although the PM managed to convince about 40 Tory MPs to change their mind, it was not almost enough to overturn the historic 230 vote defeat she suffered on the same deal in January.

He told BBC Radio 4's Today programme that Eurosceptic MPs had to "start with realities" that less than a quarter of MPs would accept a "No Deal" Brexit and said he expected a move to reject "No Deal" would pass handsomely.

But Corbyn made no mention of a second referendum - which the party is theoretically committed to supporting if it can not secure a general election - in his remarks after the vote, and hardly referred to it in his earlier speech in the Commons debate, it noted. "I believe we have a good deal".

"While an extension of Article 50 is now inevitable, responsibility for that extension lies exclusively and squarely at the Prime Minister's door", he said. To take no deal off the table, it is not enough to vote against no deal - you have to agree to a deal.

He said: "'The unilateral statement is a weak Government trying to fool its own backbenchers because the European Union has not even signed up to it".

The plan, known as the Malthouse compromise, is backed by Brexiteer members of the European Research Group of Tory MPs, as well as the DUP and former Remain ministers like Nicky Morgan and Damian Green.

Earlier in the day, British MPs also rejected another amendment that sought to delay Brexit until May 22 by extending the Article 50 of the EU's Lisbon Treaty.
