Low allays Sane injury fears after crude Serbia challenge

Germany's new-look team made a promising return to the worldwide stage with a 1-1 draw against Serbia in a friendly on Wednesday, showing signs of improvement following a disastrous 2018.

Having controversially dropped veterans Jerome Boateng, Mats Hummels and Thomas Mueller from the national squad two weeks ago, coach Loew had announced the beginning of a "new era" ahead of Wednesday's game.

Serbian forward Milan Pavkov was sent off late in the game for a risky challenge on Leroy Sane, but the Germany and Manchester City player confirmed that he had not been injured.

"It was a vicious foul", said Low.

Sane was taken off following Pavkov's challenge in injury time, which earned the Serbia player a red card - but Low confirmed the Manchester City winger would be fit for Germany's next game, against the Netherlands on Sunday.

On the tackle, Sane added: "The foul looked worse than it was, everything is fine with my ankle".

Low's youthful side went behind to Luka Jovic's header in the 12th minute, before substitute Leon Goretzka hit the equaliser after the break.

Germany's young charges may not challenge for major global honours in the immediate future but in the likes of Reus and Ilkay Gundogan, Low has enough role models to develop his freshling squad. "Sane was lucky and got away with not getting hurt but such fouls can break bones". We were lacking a bit of chemistry.

"In the second half the team sent a very good signal that we can increase pressure and we can increase the tempo".

Bayern's experienced trio played a key part in Germany's success at the 2014 World Cup, but really struggled in the 2018 edition of the tournament.

"Generally, when we have the ball on the wings, I try to find space between the penalty spot and the edge of the area, and on this occasion, I struck the ball really well", Goretzka told RTL. "Overall, I am very satisfied with the mentality, the pressure we created".
