The purported head of the Gambino crime family, also known as "Franky Boy", was shot repeatedly outside his home in the NY borough of Staten Island late Wednesday.

Police apprehended Anthony Comello in New Jersey on Saturday and expect to charge him with murdering Cali, the New York Police Department's Chief of Detectives Dermot Shea told a news conference.

NY police said Sunday they are questioning a 24-year-old male in connection with the shooting death of Francesco "Franky Boy" Cali. "We are at the beginning stages of this investigation", Shea said. "Was the person paid to do it?"

A panicked family member called 911, telling a dispatcher Cali was run over before he was shot, though investigators were still looking into whether the gunman mowed the mobster down, sources said.

Surveillance video of the killing showed a man, allegedly Mr Comello, crash his vehicle into Mr Cali's parked SUV, drawing Mr Cali outside in what might have been a ploy to lure him out of the house, Mr Shea said.

Comello has numerous addresses, including on Staten Island, the official said.

Sources say Comello was arrested by the New York/New Jersey Regional Fugitive Task Force of the U.S. Marshal's Service.

Police were searching for the pickup truck that raced from the grisly scene, sources said.

Federal prosecutors referred to Cali in court filings in recent years as the underboss of the Mafia's Gambino family, once one of the most powerful crime organizations in the country.

It is unclear what Comello was doing in Brick Township, although staffers at Ocean County Scanner News say he has family in the town.

Later that year, he pleaded guilty to extortion conspiracy related to the planned construction of a NASCAR speedway on Staten Island - a plan that eventually was scrapped.

Cali was sentenced to 16 months in prison and was released in 2009.

He is the first reputed mob boss murdered in New York City in 30 years.
