Marvel Studios Taps Destin Creston To Direct 'Shang Chi' Film

Marvel Studios Taps Destin Creston To Direct 'Shang Chi' Film

Evan Agostini/Invision/AP Director Destin Daniel Cretton will helm "Shang-Chi", Marvel's first movie centered on an Asian superhero.

Wonder Woman 1984 co-writer Dave Callaham was previously reportedly as the film's screenwriter, as well as Sony Pictures Animation's planned Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse sequel.

In the wrong hands, the Kung Fu character of Shang-Chi could open up Marvel Studios to accusations of stereotyping (and indeed, he was created by Jim Starlin and Steve Englehart as a response to the popularity of the show Kung Fu).

Shang-Chi, whose name is also Chinese for "rising of the spirit", was trained by his father in martial arts since birth.

Introduced in Special Marvel Edition #15 in December 197, the script will reportedly modernize the source material in order to avoid the character stereotypes of the time.

Marvel Studios has often reached into the independent film world to pluck talented filmmakers for their superhero movies, and they've done it again with their Shang-Chi director. Share your thoughts below!

Larson first worked with Cretton when she starred in his second film, Short Term 12. Both Jordan and Larson have made an impact in recent Marvel Studios movies, Larson in the title role of the box office hit Captain Marvel and Jordan as Killmonger in last year's mega-blockbuster Black Panther.

Shang-Chi joins an ever-growing field of developing projects that will reshape the MCU following the events of Avengers: Endgame. He has since taken a back seat, but with news of a new movie it's likely that Marvel will push the character to the forefront of their publishing initiative. He's now directing Just Mercy, which he also wrote, with Larson and Michael B. Jordan starring.

Jordan appeared in 2018's "Black Panther", Marvel's first solo movie with a black lead.
