Microsoft's Chromium-based Edge browser leaks online, can be downloaded

The latest leak of Chromium Edge follows Microsoft's quiet launch of a new extensions page and confirmation that the browser will allow users to install progressive web apps (PWAs) directly from the web as well as from the Microsoft Store. Once you have downloaded the extension, it will ask you to choose a branch.

The new build confirms much of what we've seen before: the browser is a minimally changed rebranded version of Chrome, replacing integration with Google's accounts with integration with Microsoft's accounts. On Saturday The Verge claimed an exclusive with its screenshots showing the Chromium-powered Edge in action.

The similarities between Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge are more than obvious at this point, and this makes total sense since they're based on the same engine. What are you most looking forward to with the new Microsoft Edge? As for HTML5 web tests, Microsoft Edge based on Chromium scores much lower. The older version of Edge supported a limited amount of extensions through some developers who decided it was worthwhile to make extensions.

While the extension isn't really useful at the moment, it will serve as a single portal for users to check recent announcements, new features, as well as known and fixed issues for users in the preview version of Chromium Edge. Users can toggle two extension sources; a curated source of extensions explicitly enabled by Microsoft (the current pick is available to browse on the Microsoft Edge Insider Addons web page), or extensions direct from Google's store.

Hands-on with the new Chromium-powered version of Microsoft Edge

Back in December HEXUS reported that Microsoft had confirmed it would adopt the open-sourced Chromium code to transform Edge.

KitGuru Says: There's still a long way to go before this version of Edge appears on anyone's radar, with many hoping for improvements on Chrome's scroll lag and memory usage.

A safer route is to consider the aforementioned spilled details, and these come from The Verge, which got an early look at the new browser thanks to an "anonymous" source. The Verge reports that when first installed, users are prompted to import favorites, passwords, and browsing history from Chrome or Edge. There are some issues with syncing, but I honestly don't think there are any other issues stopping Microsoft from releasing the new browser to Insiders any time now.
