The deceased have been identified as Apoorva Prabhu (35), Ranjana Tambe (40) and Zahid Shiraj Khan (32).

A 45-member team of the National Disaster Response Force was at the site.

An audit of the bridge's safety was carried out past year, said Maharashtra state Education Minister Vinod Tawde.
