New Zealand Shooting: Pakistani man dies in an attempt to stop attacker

Pakistan bestowed a national award on one of the victims of last week's mosque attack in New Zealand who died along with his son while trying to confront the suspected white supremacist accused of the country's worst peacetime mass shooting.

"They said, 'Would you like to go to travel to New Zealand as refugees there?"

"We are in touch with all the families".

Others killed in attack include Naeem Rashid and his 22-year-old son Talha Naeem, Sohail Shahid, Syed Jahandad Ali, Syed Areeb Ahmed and Mehboob Haroon.

Rashid is survived by his wife, Ambareen Alam, who teaches at a university in Christchurch, and two sons.

The foreign minister said that the government was in contact with the heirs of the victims of those who were martyred in Christchurch terrorist attack and a crisis management cell has also been established at the Foreign Office regarding in this regard.

Pakistan has several awards to recognize civilian bravery, and Khan did not specify which one would be awarded to Rashid, whose son also died in the massacre.

"Pakistan is proud of Mian Naeem Rashid who was martyred trying to tackle the white supremacist terrorist and his courage will be recognised with a national award".

Up till now, nine Pakistanis-origin individuals have been confirmed dead in the horrific attack that sent shock waves across the world.

When Khan heard about the violence in New Zealand, he sent his friend a Facebook message, but didn't hear back.

Rashid moved from Pakistan to New Zealand to work as a teacher in Christchurch.

Thirty-four wounded remained in hospital, where officials said 12 were in critical condition.

Earlier, High Commissioner Abdul Malik told a private news channel that they are in contact with the local Pakistani community as well as local authorities to find out about casualties.

Two days after the shootings, Brenton Harris Tarrant, 28, appears to be the only person in custody that has been linked to the attack.
