Nissan will stop manufacturing Infiniti models at Sunderland

Nissan will stop manufacturing Infiniti models at Sunderland

However, the plan is the latest blow to the workers at the Sunderland plant, the UK's largest auto factory, after Nissan previously announced plans to build its new X-Trail in Japan. Past year the company delivered just 6,000 units in the region. According to the plan, Infiniti will withdraw from western European markets in early 2020.

So far this year Infiniti's sales are down almost 11 percent to 20,909 units in the United States. Nissan's luxury brand will still have a presence in Eastern Europe, Asia, and the Middle East.

Nissan employs about 200 workers on Infiniti production in Sunderland.

As for its retailers, the company says it will conclude end of franchise agreements while providing the support and services necessary to ensure a smooth transition.

It added: 'As a result of this restructuring plan, production of the Q30 and QX30 is to cease by mid-2019 at the manufacturing location in Sunderland, UK.

Infiniti UK confirmed it will honour any outstanding vehicles warranties, while customers with a vehicle on order will be contacted in due course.

Sky News reported last week that shifts at the Sunderland plant could be reduced from three to two a day and potential result in up to 400 job losses.

Infiniti launched in Europe and the United Kingdom in 2008, but it has never taken off here.

Just 750 Infiniti cars were bought by Britons a year ago. Infiniti intends on electrifying its portfolio by 2021, which might not be fast enough for Europe's liking.

Workers at Britain's biggest vehicle plant received more bad news today when Nissan's luxury Infiniti division announced that it will halt production in Sunderland within months.

The brand plans to focus more on its SUV lineup in North America, bring five new or significantly-redesigned vehicles to China over the next five years, improve quality of sales and residual value and realise more synergies with Nissan.
