Russian Federation accuses United States of plotting 'coup' in Venezuela

The statement of the diplomat was a response to the condemnation of the visit voiced by the General Secretariat of the Organization of American States (OAS), the Russian Foreign Ministry website states.

Much of Venezuela remains without electricity as a new power outage spread across the country in what many fear will be a repeat of the chaos nearly two weeks ago during the nation's largest-ever blackout.

His claim was backed by most western nations, but opposed by Russian Federation and China, who continue to endorse the socialist regime of President Maduro.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in return has warned that the US will not "stand idly by as Russian Federation exacerbates tensions".

Bolton earlier called on Russian Federation to "work with the global community to support the Venezuelan people", and accused Moscow of supporting legitimate Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, to whom he referred as a "corrupt dictator".

"If the blackout lasts two days down here, it'll last five up there", said Maria Ojeda, 20, who works at a piñata shop in Caracas.

Earlier the World Trade Organisation was forced to postpone a regular dispute settlement meeting after the United States refused to recognise Venezuela, diplomats said, potentially putting a long-term obstacle in the WTO's trade dispute system.

Power went down in Caracas around 13:20 (17:20 GMT) on Monday, causing chaos in the city's public transport system as the metro shut down and many thousands of people had to stream home on foot or by bus.

People wait inside a darkened office building during a power outage in Caracas, Venezuela, Monday, March 25, 2019. The largest oil export terminal of Jose was paralyzed by the outage, according to two oil industry workers and a union leader, while Refinitiv Eikon data showed no ships had left the terminal since Sunday.

Power went out in much of Caracas and almost a dozen states in the early afternoon, stirring memories of a week-long outage earlier in the month that was the most severe in the country's history.

Rodriguez did not explicitly blame Monday's outage on any particular individual or group.

The country suffered its worst blackout ever starting on March 7. In the state of Zulia alone, damages are estimated at more than $50 million.

Two Russian aircraft carrying military officials arrived in Venezuela over the weekend as part of the ongoing military cooperation between the two countries, Russian media has reported.
