Sanders: ‘We Must Follow New Zealand’s Lead’ on Assault-Rifle Ban

Sanders: ‘We Must Follow New Zealand’s Lead’ on Assault-Rifle Ban

When a killer gunned down 50 people this month at two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand, it took lawmakers there 72 hours to ban assault rifles and high-capacity magazines.

Democrat congresswoman, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, highlighted in a tweet that the Sandy Hook massacre, where 20 children were shot dead, occurred six years ago and not even that tragedy could convince the Senate to hold a vote on universal background checks.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said that the sales ban, effective immediately, would include "every semi-automatic weapon used in the terrorist attack last Friday".

New Zealand's prime minister, 38, nursing her broken country, blinked rapidly before recovering.

Australia banned semi-automatic weapons and launched a gun buy-back after the Port Arthur massacre in 1996 in which 35 people were gunned down.

The Guardian obtained a copy of Ardern's draft legislation, and reports that the law will focus directly on prohibiting "semi-automatic.22 calibre rimfire firearms with a magazine which holds no more than ten rounds", as well as "semi-automatic and pump action shotguns with a non-detachable tubular magazine which holds no more than five rounds".

Here's a look at some of the new laws enacted after USA mass shootings, and how long each took.

"Christchurch happened, and within days New Zealand acted to get weapons of war out of the consumer market". "This is what leadership looks like". "It's also what confiscation and banning most semi-auto looks like, too".

Ardern said the man suspected of the attack bought his weapons legally with a standard gun license and modified their capacity by using 30-round magazines, "essentially turning them into military-style semi-automatic weapons".
