SpaceX's new Dragon capsule successfully docked on the International Space Station on Sunday, Nasa and SpaceX confirmed.

The announcement came directly from the ISS Twitter account, which through the post that we propose at the bottom announced the docking with the door of the Harmony module, occurred at 5:51 am, while the station was traveling at over 250 miles on the Pacific Ocean, north of New Zealand.

The mission is a test launch and only has a dummy on board the capsule ahead of a manned flight scheduled for later this year.

Crew Dragon next fired its thrusters to begin an approach initiation burn, which brought it inside the approach ellipsoid, a 4-by-2-kilometer egg-shaped zone surrounding the station. "Congratulations to all for this historic achievement getting us closer to flying American Astronauts on American rockets".

"We're on the precipice of launching American astronauts on American rockets from American soil again for the first time since the retirement of the space shuttles in 2011", said Bridenstine, who got a special tour of the launch pad on the eve of launch, by Musk.

"We're going to learn a ton from this mission", said NASA's commercial crew program manager, Kathy Lueders.

Ripley and the capsule are rigged with sensors to measure noise, vibration and stresses and monitor the life-support, propulsion and other critical systems. In a docking with a crew aboard, the capsule would likewise operate autonomously, though the astronauts might push a button or two and would be able to intervene if necessary. That is why it also has three windows, from where the crew members can catch a glimpse of space. After remaining in this position for approximately 10 minutes, Dragon will be cleared to proceed to 20 meters for another brief hold, followed by docking to the ISS.

Canadian astronaut David Saint-Jacques pronounced the docking flawless and called it "a lovely thing to see".

"The first day of a new era for the next generation of space explorers".

TV cameras on Dragon, as well as the space station, provided stunning views of one another throughout the rendezvous.

"This is just an incredible sight for the SpaceX team to see the ISS crewmembers inside the capsule", SpaceX engineer Tom Praderio said during a live webcast of the hatch opening.

"I know you heard the applause and all the clapping that went along with the accomplishment today and so it's just one more milestone that gets us ready for our flight coming up here". Boeing is looking to launch its Starliner capsule without a crew as early as April and with a crew possibly in August.
