Thiem Stuns Federer To Win Paribas Open At Indian Wells

I lost my last two Masters 1000 finals, but I won this one and it feels as nice as a grand slam.

Roger Federer admitted Dominic Thiem deserved his first ATP Masters 1000 title on the hard courts of Indian Wells, but explained how clay is where the Austrian may have the "secret" to achieve greatness.

The 37-year-old Federer was not able to profit from a walkover at the semi-final after world number-two Rafael Nadal was forced to pull out of their scheduled match due to a knee injury.

"It's unreal", said Thiem. "I$3 just came up against somebody who was, on the day, a bit better when it really mattered". Just incredible that I got here, [it is] my first really big title.

Thiem earned the crucial break in the 11th game of the final set, connecting on two sharply angled passing winners off of Federer drop shots to give himself a break point which he converted with a stinging forehand victor.

Roger Federer says this makes his rivalry with Rafael Nadal even more cooler. He did very well when he got up to the ball, stayed calm, made the shot.

Thiem sealed the match after two hours and two minutes when Federer's backhand found the net and will now return to a career-high ranking of fourth in the world, bumping Federer down to fifth. Federer was halted from creating history at Indian Wells 2019 by becoming the only name in the history of BNP Paribas Open to clinch the title for the sixth time in his career.

Federer, who lost last year's final in Indian Wells to Juan Martin del Potro, made a confident start. "I feel like he had to come up with the goods, and it did feel like to some extent it was on my racquet", Federer said.

Thiem claimed his 12th career title - as he noted at the trophy ceremony when he acknowledged Federer.

And the Austrian praised the legacy of the 37-year-old, insisting that it was tough to play against him. 'Because you have to beat not only the player but somehow also the great aura they all have, all these titles they have won. You can't just copy and paste and play exactly the same thing again.

In what often is the case in small sample sizes, wild fluctuation in break point performance has a considerable impact, and with Federer saving under 50% of break points on his serve against Thiem in his career, this has been a major contributory factor as to why the series reads 2-2, as opposed to Federer leading it.

Momentum swung in Thiem's favor when he broke Federer at a crucial juncture in the deciding set to take a 6-5 lead.

Federer cruised through the first set in 36 minutes, breaking Thiem twice. "I think when you feel that way, you take it more. positively?" said Federer, who was stunned in the fourth round of the Australian Open by reigning Next Gen ATP Finals champion Stefanos Tsitsipas. "The second one, if he doesn't pick it up quick, he's not going to be there, but he did", Federer said. I had my chances. "I was not crying around", he said.

"I'm not too disappointed".
