Trump nominates former Delta executive to run Federal Aviation Administration

Representatives for Boeing and the Indonesian safety committee declined to comment on the earlier flight.

Boeing Co, facing its biggest crisis in years following deadly crashes of its flagship 737 Max aircraft, has brought in a new vice-president of engineering while dedicating another top executive to the aircraft investigations, a company e-mail showed on Tuesday (March 19).

Dickson was Delta's senior vice president of flight operations until retiring on October 1 after 27 years with the airline, including time flying the 737 and other Boeing jets. He was also an Air Force pilot.

Chao said the audit she requested is necessary "to help inform the Department's decision-making and the public's understanding, and to assist the FAA in ensuring that its safety procedures are implemented effectively".

The updates are meant to address how the aircraft's flight control system - MCAS (Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System) - responds to erroneous sensor inputs, the planemaker said in a statement.

The November 28, 2018 report on the crash by Indonesia's National Transportation Committee said the plane had experienced multiple failures on previous flights and hadn't been properly repaired.

With no Senate-confirmed FAA chief to guide Trump on the issue, Boeing CEO and Trump friend Dennis Muilenburg had the president's ear and insisted that the plane was safe ― despite widespread concern raised by pilots flying the aircraft.

After Boeing finishes the software, the FAA still must approve it.

A federal grand jury in Washington sent a subpoena to someone involved in the plane's development seeking emails, messages and other communications, the person told The Associated Press.

It was the second Boeing 737 Max 8 to meet such a fate in under six months, and investigators have pointed to "clear similarities" between this crash and the Lion Air Flight 610 disaster in October, which killed 189 people. Both accidents happened shortly after takeoff. The U.S. Transportation Department's inspector general is conducting a review of how the plane was certified to fly and a grand jury under the Justice Department is also seeking records in a possible criminal probe of the plane's certification. None of the documentation for the Max aircraft included an explanation, the union leaders said. Boeing still makes an older version of the popular 737, but it expected the Max to account for 90 percent of all 737 deliveries this year.
