United Kingdom no-deal Brexit tariffs a ‘potential disaster’ for Irish farming

United Kingdom no-deal Brexit tariffs a ‘potential disaster’ for Irish farming

The News Letter asked HMRC, which will ultimately police such arrangements, whether the tariff-free arrangement for goods going from the RoI to NI would also apply to RoI goods destined for the GB market which transit via Northern Ireland.

David Sterling, the head of the Northern Ireland Civil Service, warned in December of an upsurge in smuggling.

Prime Minister Theresa May suffered a second, heavy parliamentary defeat on the withdrawal deal she struck with the bloc on Tuesday, leaving open the possibility of an abrupt, economically damaging Brexit without a transition arrangement.

Ministers said today that products from the European Union including beef, pork, chicken, butter, cheese and fish would also be subject to import taxes expected to push up prices in the supermarkets from March 29 if there is no deal.

But Britain would slash tariffs elsewhere on the vast majority of goods entering the country.

Zero tariffs would be applied to items such as footwear, aluminium and steel, machinery, paper and wood products, and weapons and ammunition.

Under the plan, exporting directly from the RoI to Great Britain means firms will face tariffs on their agricultural goods.

The government said it would not apply a tariff regime and customs border on goods transiting across the land border from Ireland to Northern Ireland but admitted that this created a "potential for exploitation" if those goods are then transported across the sea to mainland Britain for sale.

Instead, normal compliance and intelligence methods will be used to detect any traders attempting to abuse the system.

However, Simon Coveney, Ireland's foreign minister, voiced concern about the fact any tariffs at all are to be introduced on Irish agriculture by the United Kingdom government.

Tonight MPs will vote on whether to go for a No Deal Brexit. Small businesses trading across the border and not now Value-Added Tax registered would be able to report Value-Added Tax online periodically, without any new processes at the border.

Goods crossing the border from Ireland into Northern Ireland would not be covered by the new import tariff regime.

Proposed tariff rates on a range of food products were announced as a proportion of the so-called "most favoured nation" (MFN) now imposed by the European Union on imports from countries which do not have a free trade agreement.

'The measures announced today recognise the unique circumstances of Northern Ireland.

Northern Ireland Secretary Karen Bradley said: "The Government has been clear that a deal with the European Union is the best outcome for Northern Ireland".

The decision to refrain from checks at the Irish border would be temporary while longer term solutions were negotiated.
