Wilder bout with Breazeale confirmed

Deontay Wilder will defend his WBC heavyweight boxing championship against Dominic Breazeale May 18 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

The two rivals looked as good as locked in for a rematch and both men were saying all the right things in regards to their pursuit of Anthony Joshua, who now holds three of the four versions of the world title.

"It's always great to get a mandatory out of the way".

First, we saw the rematch between Wilder and Fury fall through out of the blue when The Gypsy King signed a deal with American broadcaster ESPN which effectively ruled out a fight with the WBC Champion Wilder, who now works under Al Haymon in the States.

Breazeale, who had been on course to fight Dillian Whyte before Fury's agreement with ESPN took him away from Wilder, responded: "I'm excited for the event more so than just fighting Deontay Wilder". As did the prospect of Fury either meeting Wilder in a rematch of their epic draw or Joshua at Wembley Stadium when he agreed his new £80million U.S. television contract with ESPN.

Breazeale, also 33, is 20-1 with 18 KOs, with the sole loss coming to Joshua almost three years ago. And the feeling is mutual. I have things that I want to do.

Their acrimony stems in part from a hotel incident after each fought on the same card two years ago.

Wilder v Breazeale will be televised by Showtime. Perhaps most noteworthy is that, unlike Joshua's defense that will be streamed, Wilder chose to stick with cable TV and Showtime, praising the channel's loyalty to him. DAZN, ESPN and Showtime will be hugely reluctant to let their star attractions fight on another platform and thus be seen to cede power to one of their rivals, and that could once again mean that the politics of boxing over rides the will of he fan. Wilder claims his younger brother, also a boxer, Marsellos, dropped Breazeale during the incident, which he says could've gone a lot worse for the Eastvale, Calif., product. "Because of his insistence, that's the primary reason we're standing here today". "I'm going to continue to believe that until someone takes it away from me".

"I hold the keys in the division", said Wilder.
