Of these, 10,000 deaths were from heart disease, 913,000 were from obesity-related cancers, and almost 339,000 from type 2 diabetes. Deaths related to diet have increased from 8 million in 1990, largely due to increases in the population and population ageing. The report also stated that one in five deaths can be avoided by eating and drinking better.

Some 20% of deaths that occurred worldwide in 2017 were associated with poor diet, a major new study has found.

The research tracked trends in consumption of 15 dietary factors from 1990 to 2017 in 195 countries.

The study found that the leading risks are diets high in sodium, low in whole grains, low in fruit, low in nuts and seeds, low in vegetables and low in omega-3 fatty acids.

"We simply can't all adopt a healthy diet under the current global agriculture system", says study co-author Evan Fraser, director of the Arrell Food Institute at the University of Guelph.

"The really big story for people to act on is increase your whole grains, fruit, nuts, seeds and vegetable intake and reduce salt if you can".

The UK ranked 23rd (127 deaths per 100,000) above Ireland (24th) and Sweden (25th), and the U.S. ranked 43rd (171 deaths per 100,000) after Rwanda and Nigeria (41st and 42nd), China ranked 140th (350 deaths per 100,000 people), and India 118th (310 deaths per 100,000 people).

Dr Afshin, who wrote a global paper on obesity in 2017, said the latest study shows too much fat, sugar and salt causes chronic health problems irrespective of their effect on a person's weight.

In fact, the world consumed, on average, just 12% of the recommended amount of nuts and seeds, but drank 10-times the recommended amount of sugary drinks. "This concept of increasing intake of healthy food should be added to current policy debates for improving diets", he said. He says, globally, we produce too many starchy foods, too much sugar and too much fat - but not enough produce.

He added that the study showed that campaigners should start promoting healthy foods such as nuts and fruit rather talking about the harmful affects of red meat, sugar and fat.

The global diet also included less than a quarter of the recommended amount of whole grains - at 29 grams average intake a day, compared with the recommended 125 grams - and nearly double the recommended amount of processed meat - at around 4 grams average intake per day, compared with the 2 grams recommended.

What would happen if everyone around the globe began to eat a healthy diet, filling three-fourths of their plates with fruits, vegetables and whole grains?

The conclusion was drawn at the end of a long-standing global study funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and published in The Lancet on April 3.
