Sanders and his wife - they say they do their own taxes, without the help of an accountant - earned just over $205,000 in income in 2014, but in 2017, a year after he lost the Democratic nomination to Clinton, Sanders earned an estimated $1.06 million. Sanders said in a recent interview with The New York Times that lucrative book sales are what made him a millionaire - and that he will release his tax returns next Monday.

"If you write a best-selling book, you can be a millionaire, too", he said.

Sanders had been promising to release a decade's worth of tax returns for more than a month.

"I hope that Donald Trump will do exactly the same", he added. "We wanted to release 10 years of tax returns".

Since the 1970s, every president has been audited by the inland revenue service, but CNN reports this should not prevent Trump from releasing his tax returns. Sanders has bristled at comparisons between his behavior and the president's.
