Braves announce seven-year deal with Ozzie Albies

The Atlanta Braves and second baseman Ozzie Albies have agreed to a seven-year contract extension worth $35 million, the team announced Thursday. It will also feature two option years.

Albies had been playing this season on a one-year deal worth $575,000. Albies, 22, will be paid $1 million in 2019 and 2020, $3 million in 2021, $5 million in 2022 and $7 million in 2023, 2024, and 2025.

Last season, Albies hit.261/.305/.452, with 24 home runs, in 684 plate appearances.

Albies made the National League All-Star team in his first full season in 2018. Dansby Swanson or Johan Camargo are two other young players with questions Atlanta could gamble on now.

Signing Ozzie and Acuna long term is the best case scenario for a team who has been unwilling to spend on blockbuster deals in seasons past.

As noted by ESPN's Jeff Passan, when taking into account both Albies and Acuña Jr.'s potential, "Atlanta bought itself hundreds of millions of dollars in surplus value" with both deals. "I want to be a fearless for the rest of my life". If the extensions are picked up, the deal could last through the 2027 season. Yet, at the end of the day, these players agreed to their contracts and could have tested the free agent market if they so pleased.

Ozzie Albies knows he could have earned a lot more money going year to year and waiting for even greater riches in salary arbitration and free agency.

I don't think anyone can argue that Ozzie Albies is Jose Altuve, yet he is guaranteed more money than Altuve was at the same stage of their respective careers while allowing him to play with a close friend in a city that he now calls home.
