By Targeting Iran's IRGC, Trump Goes Where No Other Administration Has

President Hassan Rouhani has issued a warning to Donald Trump after the United States president's decision to designate Iran's Revolutionary Guard (IRGC) as a terrorist group. "America has failed to block our advances", Khamenei, who controls the Guards, was quoted as saying by the state media.

Trump added that the move was meant to "significantly expand the scope and scale" of pressure on Iran.

The designation effectively means that anyone who deals with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps could face prison in the United States.

He called the Revolutionary Guard a "devoted" force that fought militant groups in Iran as well as in Iraq and Syria. The unprecedented move against another country's armed forces is bound to rachet up tensions with Tehran. "The Revolutionary Guards will increase their defensive and offensive capabilities in the coming year", said IRGC commander Mohammad Ali Jafari according to Reuters.

Asked about the US move, the French foreign ministry replied in an electronic press briefing that France remained committed to the 2015 Iran nuclear deal. Iran now says it will designate U.S. Central Command as a "terrorist organization".

Relations in both of these nations may be complicated for US officials who will now be barred from working with groups that continue to openly cooperate with Iran's terror-designated military branch.

Rouhani also asked the French president to help speed up a European trade initiative to facilitate business dealings between Iran and European Union countries. The IRGC also caused casualties to U.S soldiers in Iraq by providing roadside bombs to its proxies. Similar alerts were issued at the start of the Iraq War in 2003 and more recently when the Trump administration announced it would recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital. He said Japan will say what it must to the country and continue working to solve problems through discussion and dialogue.

NRCI president-elect Maryam Rajavi described the U.S. action as a "long-standing and righteous demand" of the Iranian Resistance and "an imperative for Middle East security, peace, and stability". And whenever we impose sanctions on Iran, it's usually followed by a range of threats.

Earlier in July, Tehran has also threatened to disrupt oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz in the Gulf if the United States tries to strangle Iran's economy by halting its oil exports.

Iranian lawmakers dressed in paramilitary uniforms chanted "Death to America" as they convened Tuesday for an open session of parliament after the White House designated Iran's Revolutionary Guard a foreign terrorist organization.

Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei rejected the U.S.'s move, saying the Guards had confronted enemies at home and overseas, state TV reported.

"With this unwise action, we will deal with the USA troops under the command of the CENTCOM as a terrorist group and we will spare no efforts in support of the IRGC anti-terror actions in the fight against CENTCOM terrorist group", the General Staff of Iranian Armed Forces further notes.
