English Premier League: Newcastle move closer to survival with win over Leicester

Rafael Benitez hailed the "massive" potential of Newcastle United after a 1-0 win at Leicester City moved the Magpies 10 points clear of the Premier League's relegation zone.

"Doing a little bit more - I'm not saying spending £200m - but doing a little bit more, doing the right things, we can compete with the teams between 7th and 12th, but we need to do things right".

And Perez feels without the former Liverpool manager in charge the Magpies may have gone down. "That's what we all feel in the dressing-room as well".

- Since his debut for Newcastle at the start of the 2016-17 Championship season, Matt Ritchie has assisted 17 league goals for the club, at least four more than any other player in that time.

"It should be enough". With the players we have, we'll work with them to open up the idea of where we can be better in that situation. If you go to sign a player from Leicester City now, you have to pay £30m. You have to suffer like we did (against Leicester). We have four to go and we have the ambition to keep climbing the table.

Benitez's contract expires this summer and he's made it clear that his future at St James' Park depends on how much cash will be available to him in the transfer window.

"They got Rafa-ed in many ways, he has done a great job again and Ayoze Perez was the match victor", said Lineker on BBC One's Match of the Day (23:53, Saturday April 13th). "Maybe with another manager we would have struggled even more".

They should be assured of maintaining their top-flight status after a hard season tarnished by Benitez's discontent over a lack of backing in the transfer market from controversial owner Mike Ashley. "That's football, anything can happen". Only in 1994-95 (10) and 2001-02 (nine) have they lost more home Premier League games in a single season.

"Hopefully, I can improve the number (of goals) I had last season", said the 25-year-old. That will need to get sorted and we need to focus on football and finishing in a better position than we did last season.
