Large, flightless bird attacks and kills its owner

An emu-like creature known as the "world's most unsafe bird" reportedly killed its 75-year-old owner on his Florida farm.

A captive cassowary, the large flightless bird considered the most unsafe of its species, killed a man Friday near Gainesville.

The bird's owner, Marvin Hajos - who is 75, according to CNN affiliate WCJB - made the initial call to 911 Friday about 10 a.m. ET.

A 75-year-old man has been killed by a large, flightless creature that is considered to be the "world's most risky bird".

A man has been killed by the "world's deadliest bird" after he fell and it attacked him.

"My understanding is that the gentleman was in the vicinity of the bird and at some point fell".

Lieutenant Brett Rhodenizer, from the Alachua County Sheriff's Office, told mycbs4.com: "Unfortunately, he did not survive his injuries at the hospital".

Cassowary diets consist exclusively of fruit, but each of the birds' three-toed feet hides a "dagger-like" claw on the inner toe that can grow up to 4 inches long, according to information published online by the San Diego Zoo. He is known as an experienced breeder and is said to have kept other kinds of exotic animals for decades.

Speaking to local media, Deputy Chief Jeff Taylor said: "It looks like it was accidental". The bird is secured on private property, Mr Taylor said.

The largest cassowary species can stand up to 1.2 - 1.7 meters (5.6 feet) in height and weigh up to 76 kilograms (167 pounds).

The organisation says: "The cassowary can slice open any predator or potential threat with a single swift kick".

Although they are usually thought of as shy and reclusive, like any animal, they can become violent when they feel threatened or cornered.

They are not raised for food, but are sought after by collectors.
