NASA and ESA Pay Volunteers To Stay In Bed For 60 Days

Would you be willing to spend 60 days in bed for $19,000?

They're still looking for participants, who can sign up here.

The study runs across 89 days: 15 days of familiarisation, 60 days of bed rest and then 14 days of rest and astronaut rehab to get you back to normal life after two months off. The reduced physical stress in space leads their muscles and bones to break down and body fluids to shift toward their head, according to the German Aerospace Center, which was commissioned by NASA and the European Space Agency to conduct the study.

Some study participants will be spun in a short-arm human centrifuge that generate artificial gravity. The pair aboard the International Space Station will understand what happens to the human body while in microgravity for extreme lengths of time.

While on bed rest, everything must be completed while lying down, including eating, washing, showering, going to the bathroom and leisure activities.

The 24 men and women will spend their days and nights in beds angled downward by six degrees, propped up with their feet at an incline above their heads, with one shoulder touching the mattress at all times, the report said. "Our team consists of scientific, physiotherapeutic and medical professionals - and nutritionists are also on board to take care of your physical well-being", says the website.

The study is composed of two rounds.

The study won't allow the volunteers to exert themselves and they will be put through various tests of their cognition, muscle strength, balance, and cardiovascular function during the process.

Plus, as this experiment is happening at the German Aerospace Centre in Cologne you need to be able to speak German and be over 18. They are looking for women between 24 and 55 years old who do not smoke.

In 2017 NASA conducted a similar bed rest study, in which 11 people spent 30 days in bed.
