New York City Mayor Bill De Blasio Orders Vaccinations Amid Measles Outbreak

Some residents - even those who support vaccination - said they felt uncomfortable with the city pushing vaccines on people who did not want them.

Officials said they would help people arrange to get shots but were prepared to fine them as much as $1,000 if they refused. This order affects residents of the following zip codes: 11205, 11206, 11221 and 11249.

Officials say 285 cases of measles have been confirmed in New York City since the beginning of the outbreak in October.

The declaration requires all unvaccinated people in those areas who may have been exposed to the virus to get the vaccine, including children over 6 months old.

"There is a campaign with very intentional efforts to give misinformation", Herminia Palacio, the city's deputy mayor for public health, said at the news conference. The disease is highly contagious among people who aren't vaccinated, and it kills about two to three children out of every 1,000 who get the disease. The letters from Lurie carry a similar message.

"This is the epicenter of a measles outbreak that is very, very troubling and must be dealt with immediately, ' de Blasio said".

"This outbreak is being fueled by a small group of anti-vaxxers in these neighborhoods. They have been spreading unsafe misinformation based on fake science", Dr. Barbot said in the statement. "I think we also know life is busy and if some people are waiting to get into their next visit, we'll get them in earlier to get the vaccine".

The measure comes a day after the city ordered Orthodox Jewish schools and day care programs in Williamsburg to exclude unvaccinated students from classes during the outbreak or risk being closed down.

"This is the second-greatest number of cases reported in the U.S. since measles was eliminated in 2000", it said.

A recently released large-scale Danish study looked at any possible risk for autism from the MMR vaccine and the conclusion was that "MMR vaccination does not increase the risk for autism, does not trigger autism in susceptible children, and is not associated with clustering of autism cases after vaccination".

So far, 21 people to be hospitalized with the measles, including five people who required intensive care, according to Barbot, who noted there have been no fatalities. About a thousand developed encephalitis, which is swelling of the brain. Others remain convinced, against expert assurances, that vaccines are unsafe. Newborns, pregnant individuals, and those with weakened immune systems can not get vaccinated, so it is important that everyone around them be vaccinated in order to protect them from contracting the virus and prevent severe complications in these susceptible populations.

The MMR vaccine protects against measles, mumps, and rubella.

Under the order, any person living in the affected areas who has not been vaccinated must be immunised within 48 hours. Once people have become infected by measles, their bodies build up their immune systems to prevent new inflections. New Yorkers should call 311 to access a list of facilities that can provide MMR at low or no cost.

NY has contended with measles outbreaks and the legal challenges that have arisen in efforts to contain them. We can not allow this risky disease to make a comeback in New York City. Infants ages 6 to 11 months should also be vaccinated prior to worldwide travel.

The New York Civil Liberties Union also questioned the city's emergency order requiring vaccinations for all.

Michigan's measles outbreak dates back to March 13, when the health department reported that the first case came from someone "visiting from Israel following a stay in NY".
