Qualcomm Snapdragon 665, Snapdragon 730 and gaming focused Snapdragon 730G chipsets announced

The idea behind this processor is to bring high-performance to premium mid-range smartphones.

Qualcomm claims that the Snapdragon 730G offers 25 percent more graphics performance than the Snapdragon 710, and 35 percent more CPU performance.

The 730G is a variant of the Snapdragon 730 designed for gaming. With an enhanced Adreno 618 GPU, graphics are rendered up to 15% faster than seen with the Snapdragon 730. Each iteration of Snapdragon drives vast innovation that will surpass customer expectations.

The third mobile platform of the day is the Snapdragon 665, looking to make a splash in the midrange. It is based on the 8 nm manufacturing process.

The SD 665 platform features 8x Kryo 260 CPU which have been divided into four performance and four efficiency cores.

It features an X12 LTE modem that promises up to 600 Mbps, and support 802.11ac Wi-Fi with MU-MIMO - not as fast as the 730/730G.

Snapdragon 730 chipset is the successor to the Snapdragon 710 announced previous year.

While the Snapdragon 665 doesn't offer a modem capable of connecting with the high-speed 5G networks coming on line this year, it should deliver fast data speeds over LTE. That includes features like a smarter camera and even AI performance.

For the camera, there's the Spectra 165 ISP for better scene recognition and HDR. Qualcomm has also added support for 48MP camera sensors, albeit without MFNR or ZSL support.

Smartphones can use the chip to mix up a three camera combination with a telephoto lens, wide-angle and super-wide angle lens. Over 586 million mobile gamers are in China alone-twice the population of the United States, according to Qualcomm's Hiren Bhinde at Qualcomm's technology summit last December. In the new processors Qualcomm has upgraded the two CPU "big" cores from Kryo 360 (based on Arm Cortex-A75) to Kryo 470 (Cortex-A76), and max clock speeds remain the same at 2.2GHz. (The Hexagon 688 supports INT16, INT8, and mixed tensor acceleration.) And it says that the Adreno 618 has additional arithmetic logic units (AMU), which should further accelerate performance in AI workloads. Wi-Fi 6-ready features to support fast and robust connected experiences at the increased range in 2.4 and 5 GHz Wi-Fi bands.

Qualcomm's 730 and 730G platform integrates the Spectra 350 DSP, Qualcomm's first computer-vision image-signal processing chip to appear in a 7-series Snapdragon. It supports dual camera of upto 22 MP and single camera upto 192 MP. 13 download speeds (2CA and 64-QAM), dual SIM dual standby, dual-VoLTE, and VoWiFi. The camera also supports 960fps slow-motion video recording at HD resolution. It has a low-power sub-system with AI, Hexagon Voice Assistant Accelerator, native DSD support, aptX Adaptive wireless audio, and Qualcomm TrueWireless Stereo Plus technologies. There's support for Quick Charge 4+ support over USB-PD protocol.

Starting with the mid-range Snapdragon 665, Qualcomm is focusing on AI and imaging improvements over raw performance. SD 730G borrows features from the company's latest chipset SD 855.
