Student, 22, falls from Fordham University's bell tower at 4am

The New York Police Department said the unidentified student went to the Keating Hall clock tower with her friends around 4am.

The waiter, whose roommate allegedly arrived on the scene shortly after the fall, said she was gravely injured.

Emergency Medical Services rushed the student to the local hospital, where she was placed on life support. The tower is off limits to students and university officials are investigating how the students gained access to the tower.

"Our hearts go out to Sydney's parents, and her family and friends-theirs is an unimaginable loss, and we share their grief", he said.

McShane invited the Fordham community to a mass for Monfries at 7 the University Church.

The university said authorized school officials "have sometimes given tours of the tower, in part to satisfy students' curiosity about it, and reduce the likelihood that they would attempt to enter the structure without authorization".

Her uncle Gregory Monfries, said: "This is not a good time".

One student, identified only as Anne, told the United States publication she believed Ms Monfries had climbed the tower with several other students when the tragedy occurred.

She was with other seniors when she fell through an opening on the first landing of the tower, the paper reported.

"She was with a group of friends ..."

Access to the tower is restricted, a university spokeswoman told the Times. However, a senior, Anne, who declined to give her last name, said that "the doors aren't always locked".

Sydney was studying journalism and interned at InStyle magazine - being set to graduate in May.

According to the university's website, Fordham University is a Jesuit, Catholic institution focused on instilling students with "wisdom, experience, morality, critical thinking and creative problem-solving".
