The worlds largest airplane takes its first flight

The Stratolaunch, the world's largest aircraft that just so happens to be created to "enable airline-style access to space", successfully took flight for the first time in the Mojave Desert on April 13.

It flew for 150 minutes on debut outing.

According to details made available by the Stratolaunch officials, the maiden flight lasted for 2.5 hours touching a maximum altitude of 17,000 feet over the Mojave Desert.

It is a goal for the company to soon see the large aircraft carry 250-tonne rocket ships loaded with satellites to a height of 35,000 feet, with further hopes to carry the aircraft and its satellite cargo into space.

The aircraft is created to carry as many as three satellite-laden rockets at a time under the centre of its enormous wing, which stretches 117 metres - a longer wingspan than any other aircraft. "Evan specializes in experimental flight test, aviation and test safety, aircraft stability and control testing as well as operational leadership", says an official.

The plane reached speeds of 189 miles per hour (304 km/h) and performed several flight control maneuvers, including "roll doublets, yawing maneuvers, pushovers and pull-ups, and steady heading side slips", the manufacturer Stratolaunch said in a statement.

A giant six-engine aircraft with the world's longest wingspan completed what company officials called a superb initial flight over California's Mojave Desert, bringing to life a dream held by the late Microsoft co-founder Paul G. Allen. The goal for Stratolaunch is to provide an alternative launch platform for satellites other than rockets like SpaceX's Falcon 9 or SpaceX's Falcon Heavy rocket-which had its first successful test flight this week as well.

An audience cheers the first, historic flight of Stratolaunch.

"The airplane very nicely, smoothly rotated and really just lifted off the ground", he said. "It definitely was ready to fly and wanted to fly", he said.

Powered by six Boeing 747 engines, the plane is meant to climb twice as high, and with a space rocket strapped underneath.

Stratolaunch promises to cut the time between two launches as it is capable of using traditional runways for space missions.
