White House: Congress not smart enough to assess Trump taxes

White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders said sending illegal immigrants to "sanctuary cities" is an option on the table.

On Sunday morning's edition of This Week with George Stephanopoulos, host George Stephanopoulos pressed Sanders about Trump's threat to send migrants from the southern border into sanctuary cities, noting that "when this story broke on Thursday, White House officials said flatly that the idea had been rejected".

"Certainly the president is wishing no ill will and certainly not violence towards anyone, but the president is absolutely and should be calling out the congresswoman for her not only one time but history of anti-Semitic comments", Sanders said.

"If they can single out one, they can single out everybody", she said. Whether or not it moves forward, that is yet to be determined.

"I am aware that concerns have been raised regarding my request and the authority of the Committee", House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Richard Neal said in a letter to Internal Revenue Service Commissioner Charles Rettig after an initial April 10 deadline lapsed. "The president wants us to [consider it] again so that is being done and they're doing a complete and thorough review".

The tweet now leads Trump's Twitter feed and has been viewed more than 9 million times.

Scott acknowledged the president's frustration over a lack of progress on addressing the influx of migrants, but said the administration had to comply with the law.

She added that the Democratic effort puts "every American" in jeopardy.

"The president has no right to spend money appropriated by Congress for other purposes to ship immigrants all over the country", Rep.

Mr. Nadler, though, accused Mr. Trump of using asylum seekers as pawns in a fight with political opponents.

Neal's request for the returns of a sitting president is unprecedented, and legal experts say its success or failure may depend on a court ruling about the committee's legislative goal for seeking the documents. "They should not say, 'This is retribution politically.' They should say, 'This is an olive branch, '" according to The Hill.

"The Supreme Court has instructed that Congress's power to investigate is "broad" and 'encompasses inquiries concerning the administration of existing laws as well as proposed or possible needed statutes, '" Neal wrote.

"This is a unsafe risky road and frankly". "My guess is majority don't do their own taxes, and I certainly don't trust them to look through the decades of success the president's had and determine anything".

After Neal's initial request, Trump's personal attorney, Willian Consovoy, laid out a detailed legal argument in an April 5 letter (pdf) to the Treasury's legal counsel, writing that the request fails to provide a legitimate goal, is motivated by partisan politics, and sets a risky precedent.
