Did signing Le'Veon Bell get Mike Maccagnan fired?

Just two weeks after making most of the selections for the New York Jets in the NFL Draft, the team announced Wednesday that it has fired Mike Maccagnan as general manager.

ESPN reported that Brian Heimerdinger, the Jets' vice president of player personnel, also was sacked as part of the team's front office shake-up.

This was Maccagnan's first National Football League general manager job, following long stints in personnel departments for the Houston Texans and Washington Redskins.

Both announcements were made by team chairman and CEO Christopher Johnson.

If you're a NY sports fan who puts your support behind the Knicks and Jets, well, you've had better days.

There were rumors the last few weeks of a rift between Gase and Maccagnan. I don't know who decides that and gets to put that stuff out there, it kind of pisses me off a little bit because we have discussions on everything and that's our job. The Jets hired him 12 days later.

The Jets went 10-6 in their first season under Maccagnan and former coach Todd Bowles in 2015, but the team has struggled through three consecutive losing seasons since.

Maccagnan had significant input into the hiring of Gase. He also acquired left guard Kelechi Osemele from Oakland in a trade. Maccagnan, however, had all the juice when it came to talent acquisition and over. Safety Jamal Adams and defensive lineman Leonard Williams are also recent draft picks by Maccagnan who have become building blocks for the defense. ESPN reported during the draft that friction had developed between Maccagnan and Gase because of disagreements over personnel during free agency.

But Maccagnan's draft history since coming to NY is otherwise shaky, at best.
