England's Nations League squad announced and Harry Kane is on the plane

Unsurprisingly there are no uncapped players in Southgate's selection, but there is a shock call-up for Redmond.

The 25-year-old winger was last capped in March 2017.

England boss Gareth Southgate explained his decision.

Captain Harry Kane has been selected despite not playing since suffering an ankle injury.

There is no place for Ruben Loftus-Cheek after sustaining an ankle injury playing in a friendly for Chelsea on Wednesday, while fellow midfielders Declan Rice and James Ward-Prowse are involved again.

Forwards Harry Kane, Jesse Lingard, Marcus Rashford, Nathan Redmond, Jadon Sancho, Raheem Sterling, Callum Wilson. "Since the change of manager, I've liked the way the team has played".

'We know the individual players really well, so we can sense when they are feeling in the right place and when they are not.

Southgate also explained his reasons for including Kane and Winks, despite the Tottenham duo now being sidelined by injury.

It's thought he won't stipulate publicly, or to the players, which members of his initial squad are only there on standby.

"We have got to make a quick but accurate assessment on where they are over those few days", Southgate said.

"That's (Kane's fitness) one of the unknowns". He's working to be fit for the (Champions League) final. "We're keeping that door open and will see how that progresses".

But the England manager is a firm believer that Three Lions football should be free-to-all at a time when Champions League viewing is also affected by the fact it is only on BT Sport. There is the physical aspect and emotional aspect of that final that we have to look at.

"I don't think we've ever had a camp where we haven't had a lot of pull outs, but we've always adapted and managed to achieve results with new players and young players".

"Although it makes our preparation a bit more complicated, that is a challenge that we have to deal with as a group of staff".

"Even now, the potential of the squad is unbelievable and they can win it". All of these experiences are what this team hasn't had before.

A week on from winning a fan and player vote double, Manchester United star Luke Shaw has been brought back down to earth.

"He's finished the season really well with Southampton", he added. "But it gives us a lot of good options".
