It is not clear what provoked the protest, but in 2016 Mr de Blasio was fined almost $48,000 (£37,500) by the New York City Campaign Finance Board for spending violations in his first mayoral race.

On Wednesday, the New York Post editorial board outlined "all the reasons de Blasio's 2020 presidential candidacy is a complete farce", calling the mayor "incompetent", "crooked", "oblivious and arrogant" before detailing his failings. When he took office in 2014, de Blasio seemed briefly poised to become a leading voice for an emerging left wing of the Democratic Party.

One said: "I can't even express the ludicrousy of this". In an effort to curb greenhouse gas emissions coming from New York City buildings, de Blasio announced a new policy, which would impose financial penalties on landlords who fail to get their buildings up to new emissions codes.

"I'm a New Yorker, I've known Trump's a bully for a long time", he said. Just 18% have a favorable view of de Blasio while 24% have an unfavorable opinion of him. "We have to do things for working people we have to put people first that's the difference here".

"He is a JOKE, but if you like high taxes & crime, he's your man", the president wrote.

De Blasio and his wife Chirlane McCray are set to appear on Good Morning America on Thursday.

During an appearance on ABC's "Good Morning America", de Blasio dubbed the president "con don", saying "every New Yorker knows he's a con artist".

Even after six years overseeing a city of more than 8 million people, de Blasio faces an uphill battle to stand out among the Democratic contenders, who include former U.S. Vice President Joe Biden and liberal icons like U.S. Senators Bernie Sanders of Vermont and Elizabeth Warren of MA.

The new presidential candidate plans to hit the campaign trail Thursday in Iowa and will travel to SC this weekend. Trump said on Twitter. The list includes candidates like former Vice President Joe Biden and Sens.

Democratic polling for de Blasio has been particularly humbling at home. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) who has been at least been a consistent critic of eminent domain.

He is scheduled to travel to the early-voting states of Iowa and SC this weekend to begin campaigning.

De Blasio, though, has remained undaunted by the obstacles and said he believes he has a message that can resonate with the American public.
