Foxconn says all US iPhones could be made outside China if needed

Foxconn says all US iPhones could be made outside China if needed

The news comes as a new tariff of up to 25% on phones, laptops, and tablets imported to the USA from China is scheduled to come into effect by the end of June. While it's not sure that whether it's to reduce the import duties in India or whether those phones would end up outside the country, India could be key player for Apple now.

Apple's production in China has become a major concern for investors as the Trump administration escalates threats to hit Beijing with new tariffs on about $300bn worth of Chinese goods.

Apple now has a large iPhone manufacturing base in China - thanks to Foxconn, the Taiwanese based manufacturing company. After all, the largest part of iPhones is iPads are manufactured by Foxconn in China.

The US already imposed tariffs on some of the accessories Apple sells, but those hardly have a significant impact on its bottom line. Foxconn assures that it can fully support Apple if the ongoing trade war goes unpredictable.

Cupertino hasn't issued any kind of instructions for moving the production of iDevices, but Mr.Liu added that Foxconn is ready "respond swiftly and rely on localized manufacturing".

Still, the vulnerability of tech assemblers and chip manufacturers to the trade war has already been established. The Bloomberg report also states that if tariffs do come in play then it is expected that cost of Apple products may rise from anywhere between 9% to 16%.

The Hon Hai official also revealed that the company is now investing in its Indian production facilities, suggesting that if needed, more of the iPhone output could come from this country if things get more complicated in China for Apple. But there's Winston, which assembles Apple devices in India, however, they are mostly older models like the iPhone 6S. The country has summoned U.S. companies to warn them about honouring the USA's ban and warned of dire consequences. We don't think that Apple will keep a low profile if this starts to affect their business as well.
