Historic US drug bust nets 16 tons of cocaine

The ship may have been loaded with tons of illegal drugs in the Bahamas before reaching the United States, investigators told NBC Philadelphia.

Images broadcast on local television showed vehicles from the US Customs and Border Protection on the wharves of the port, and 4 agents boarding the large container ship.

The amount of cocaine found on board could have claimed "millions" of lives if released on the black market, US Attorney for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania William M. McSwain said in a tweet.

The cocaine was seized from the ship MSC Gayane, which was traveling from Chile, Panama and the Bahamas before docking in Philadelphia's Delaware River.

"Members of the ship's crew have been arrested and federally charged" following the drug bust at Philadelphia's Packer Marine Terminal, McSwain's office said on Twitter.

Check out the tweets from the USA attorney below. It is considered the largest drug bust ever in the area.

In February, customs agents seized 1,451 kilograms at the Port of NY and New Jersey with a street value estimated at $77 million US.

The bust comes after U.S. authorities seized almost 1.5 tons of cocaine in March-the biggest haul in almost 25 years at the port of New York/Newark. The Inquirer also reports that the bust happened after a member the Coast Guard found traces of cocaine on Durasevic's arms. The U.S. Attorney's Office says 16.5 tons of cocaine worth $1 billion was confiscated.

Federal authorities are searching the cargo ship, the MSC Gayane, and are continuing to investigate.
