Kyle Rudolph and Minnesota Vikings Agree to Contract Extension

Kyle Rudolph and Minnesota Vikings Agree to Contract Extension

If Irv Smith Jr. develops into a top tight end or Rudolph declines in production, the team can easily move on with few repercussions.

The news comes after weeks of deliberation between Vikings officials and Rudolph's agents, who at one point seemed at a standstill.

Prior to the extension, Minnesota had just over $600,000 in cap space, so it is a safe bet that Rudolph's new deal will restructure his earnings for this year.

"No way ... I am too young for that", Rudolph told the Minneapolis Star Tribune. Per NFL Network's Tom Pelissero, both parties came to an agreement on a contract extension for four years worth $36 million, which locks him up with the Vikings through 2023.

Rudolph is the third core veteran the Vikings retained this offseason when financial limitations felt like they would lead to dead ends.

Rudolph posted on Twitter Monday night (June 10) that Minnesota has been his home and that it will continue to be.

Rudolph, a two-time Pro Bowler, is coming off another solid season for the Vikings in which the Notre Dame product caught 64 passes for 634 yard and four touchdowns. "On that day, all I knew is that I would be playing in the National Football League, realizing my childhood dream".

"I am honored beyond words to say that my home, our home will always be in Minnesota", Rudolph wrote.

He hasn't missed a game over the last four seasons. "It's something, an element that we've never had here in my nine years being here".

"I want to be a part of the first team to win a championship here", Rudolph said.

"Usually, when you line up with three tight ends, the defense constricts, or gets bigger guys in there", coach Mike Zimmer said.
