Mysterious 'Star Trek logo' spotted on Mars by NASA

Here's William Shatner (Captain Kirk) and LeVar Burton (Geordi LaForge) tweeting out the story.

Don't expect to find Spock, Jean-Luc Picard or Michael Burnham squatting nearby, however.

"Enterprising viewers will make the discovery that these features look conspicuously like a famous logo", the MRO HiRise team posted on Twitter.

"Here, the sand formed crescent-shaped dunes called barchan dunes, sculpted by the wind; as the lava flowed, it parted around them", according to Science Alert.

"You would be right, but it is only a coincidence".

The dune resembling the logo was spotted in Hellas Planitia, which is a massive plain in the Hellas impact basin, located towards the southern end of Mars.

While fans of Star Trek and Star Wars continue to banter over the Mars images, there is a suspicious silence from devotees of Frank Herbert's Dune.

So, no, it's not an alien habitat or Starfleet base - unless the United Federation of Planets has some explaining to do. An eruption sent lava spilling out, moving around the dunes but not covering them. By the time it eventually cooled, the pattern was already there, with the sand dunes remaining "stuck up like islands", the statement said.

Following the newest finding, a question arises as to what actually came first - humans on the Red Planet, which has been the object of extensive research in terms of whether its conditions were ever compatible with life, or a popular American media franchise that is suspected to have literally left its mark there.

"However, they were still just dunes, and the wind continued to blow", the statement continued.

Researchers previous year found hundreds of crescent-shaped depressions on the surface of the Red Planet.

The orbiter has been sending back high-resolution imagery for 13 years, well past its design lifetime.
