Near-record 'dead zone' forecast off U.S. Gulf coast, threatening fish

Researchers at the University of Michigan (UM) forecast that the hypoxic zone or "dead zone" in the Gulf of Mexico this summer will be approximately 7,829 square miles, roughly the size of MA.

A hypoxic zone is an area where oxygen concentration is so low it chokes out marine life.

The low-oxygen, or hypoxic, area is likely to cover about 7,800 square miles (20,200 square kilometers) - roughly the size of MA or Slovenia, NOAA said.

The file express in 2017 is 8,776 sq. miles (22,700 sq. kilometers), somewhat smaller than Turkey.

Both forecasts were released Monday.

Experts partly credited the "abnormally high amount of spring rainfall" in the U.S. Midwest this year-which caused catastrophic flooding that could have a notable impact on both farmers and food prices in the long term-for the alarming new gulf dead zone forecasts.

While this year's zone will be larger than usual because of the flooding, the long-term trend is still not changing. This creates the dead zone.

The dead zone also exists in the Gulf of California.

Experts-including David Scheurer, a NOAA scientist who studies dead zones-are also anxious that the human-caused climate crisis could exacerbate oxygen level issues in the gulf.

The nutrients in the fertilizers feed algae that die, decompose and deplete the water of oxygen, the Louisiana scientists said. There is another annual dead zone in the mid-Atlantic's Chesapeake Bay.

It will be measured during an annual July cruise by Nancy Rabalais of the Louisiana Universities Marine Consortium, who has been measuring the zone since 1985. "This year's historic and sustained river flows will test the accuracy of these models in extreme conditions, which are likely to occur more frequently in the future, according to the latest National Climate Assessment".

The annually recurring Gulf of Mexico hypoxic zone is primarily caused by excess nutrient pollution from human activities, such as urbanization and agriculture, occurring throughout the Mississippi River watershed.

An oxygen-starved hypoxic zone, commonly called a dead zone and shown in red, forms each summer in the Gulf of Mexico. She and her team have been monitoring the Mississippi River discharge and nutrient levels since the first big pulse of flood water in the spring, so they "weren't necessarily surprised" by the results of their models.

The area could spread over 8,700 square miles (22,500 square km), scientists at Louisiana State University said on Monday - about the size of the state of MA, and five times the average.
