SC mom arrested after yelling at students over son’s bullying

Though the surveillance video lacks audio, witnesses say the mother was screaming at the children about the alleged bullying. A police report obtained by CNN confirms her account.

A SC mom is "absolutely ashamed" of herself after storming into the Greenbrier Elementary School in May to confront the children she believed were bullying her son.

Jamie Louise Rathburn " s "special surprise school visit' follows the mother posting a since-deleted video of herself ranting to the third-graders at Greenbrier Elementary School, the Greenville News reported.

Her Facebook video was brought to the attention of Greenbrier authorities.

"Maybe in her mind she was going there to confront a bully or a couple of children, but in not knowing who those were and choosing to yell at dozens of innocent kids, there is nothing appropriate about yelling at other people's children's in a school setting after you've snuck in illegally", Brotherton said.

Rathburn has been charged with disrupting a school.

". I owe the parents, the children and the staff an apology for that". Absolutely, it was wrong. "But honestly, I don't know how I could have gotten my message across any other way", Rathburn told the paper during an interview.

"I'm frustrated with the children's actions, but at the end of the day I'm angry with the adults involved in this situation because we are the ones with the power to stop this", Rathburn said.

The investigating deputy said she "lifts her finger in a pointing manner and circles around as if making sure all the kids heard her and were listening". "That was the final straw, and Rathburn confronted her son's classmates the next morning". He was called names, hit with a computer and pulled backwards off a slide by his throat, Rathburn told the Greenville News.

"I am absolutely ashamed of myself for the actions of walking up into that school", Rathburn said. She walked straight up to her son's classroom and addressed the children lined up, waiting for class to begin. Rathburn said that after one student made faces at her son, a teacher told the boy to "ignore him, stay away and be the bigger man, and I think it will stop".

"I can't go eat lunch with my children", Rathburn said.

Since the incident, the 34-year-old has created a Facebook group named "Moms over Bullies", which aims to shed light on the emotional and psychological impact bullying has on students in school. "As class mom, that's devastating". Brian Sherman, assistant to the superintendent for the school district, said that he could not comment specifically on the Rathburn case, but he told the paper that determining whether bullying happens can be hard to decipher, especially when kids provide alternative accounts of what happened. "Anybody making 300 decisions a day will make mistakes".

Rathburn is now on a no trespassing notice in which her son will not be able to return to Greenbrier Elementary School but will still be allowed to attend another school in the district.
