Shikhar Dhawan Ruled Out Of World Cup Due To Thumb Injury

Speaking to IANS, sources in the know of developments said that Dhawan has been ruled out as the injury will take more than two weeks to recover.

The in-form batsman suffered the break while facing Australia's Pat Cummins in India's second match of the tournament at the Oval on June 9.

India opener Shikhar Dhawan on Wednesday was ruled out of the ongoing World Cup after suffering a fractured thumb against Australia at The Oval, a match Virat Kohli and Co won by 36 runs.

Shikhar Dhawan was ruled out of World Cup 2019 with a thumb injury. India continue to remain unbeaten in the World Cup so far. "We have requested Rishabh Pant as the replacement". Scans then revealed hairline fracture, raising apprehensions that Dhawan might get ruled out of the tournament. Rishabh Pant, who was added as a cover for the southpaw and is now in England with the team has been named as the official replacement in the squad.

The Indian team management made a decision to put Shikhar Dhawan under observation but called in Rishabh Pant from India as stand-by.

What perhaps prompted the team management to finally make an annoucement on Dhawan's injury was the fact that even Bhuvneshwar Kumar is injured. KL Rahul opened the innings for the game against Pakistan and did well scoring a half-century and India will have to bank on him now to come good for the rest of the event.

Pant has played five ODIs since his debut against West Indies in October last year and averages 23.25, and he was part of India's squad during their home series against Australia this year.

India would have had only 13 players to select from in the Afghanistan game on June 22 if Pant was not brought in as a replacement.
