Sudan opposition members 'deported' on 2nd day of general strike

Sudan opposition members 'deported' on 2nd day of general strike

Unrest mounted quickly in April after the military ousted Sudan's long-time dictator, Omar al-Bashir.

The TMC said the arrests were the result of an investigation into last week's crackdown.

Eyewitnesses in the capital reported seeing bodies being thrown into the Nile River as the crackdown continued. The government has confirmed 61 deaths, including three members of the security services.

The New York-based group said the RSF violently broke up the protesters' main sit-in camp outside the military's headquarters in Khartoum on June 3. But after last week's brutal crackdown many opposition leaders have been forced underground.

Lieutenant General Jamaleddine Omar, a military council member, said on state television late on Sunday: "The military council has made a decision to reinforce the presence of armed forces, RSF [Rapid Support Forces] and other regular forces to help normal life return". But over the last couple of weeks, the protests have turned deadly.

It began with such high hopes.

The military council, in what could be a gesture to the protesters, announced on Monday that several government troops have been arrested pending legal action, after a preliminary investigation into the dispersal of the protesters last week found evidence of wrongdoing.

"Such a campaign does not lead to killing people and at the same time puts pressure on the military council". The militias were widely accused of crimes against humanity, and al-Bashir - now jailed in Khartoum - was indicted on charges of genocide.

The civilian uprising that precipitated his ouster was disappointed by al-Bashir's replacement with a military junta.

Mahmoud Dirir told a news conference in Khartoum on Tuesday that all previous deals between both sides have been restored and that the new talks would focus on the make-up of the disputed sovereign council.

What is the world doing?

African Union has suspended Sudan following the massacre.

The ruling junta's shut-down of internet access in Sudan has made it hard to get information, so there has also been limited media coverage of what's happening inside the country.

The Human Rights Watch said Tuesday that, based on the peacekeeping mission's own reports, the Rapid Support Forces now occupy nine of 10 sites vacated by the United Nations force within the past eight months.

"In Darfur, as in Khartoum, we've witnessed the Rapid Support Forces' despicable brutality against Sudanese civilians - the only difference being, in Darfur they have committed atrocities with impunity for years", said Kumi Naidoo, secretary general of Amnesty International.

He will also discuss the situation with the Ethiopian Prime Minister, Abiy Ahmed, who has been trying to mediate between the military council and the opposition in Sudan, before later travelling to Mozambique and South Africa.

The Sudanese authorities has deported three leaders of Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM) to Juba, the capital of South Sudan, following their release from police.
