Why social media users are going blue in solidarity with Sudan's protesters

Dressed in a white traditional robe and turban, Bashir rode in a heavily-armed convoy from the notorious Kober prison in the Sudanese capital Khartoum to be quizzed by prosecutors for alleged corruption.

The former president, who ruled his northeast African nation with an iron fist for three decades, was toppled on April 11 after weeks of protests against his reign.

Talks on a power-sharing deal have collapsed, and tensions soared on June 3 when security forces stormed a protest camp in Khartoum being maintained as a way to press military rulers to hand over power.

"The prosecution ... accused him of ...possession of foreign currency, accepting gifts in an unofficial manner", prosecutor Alaa al-Din Abdallah told reporters.

The top USA diplomat to Africa said there must be an "independent and credible" investigation into the Sudanese military's violent dispersal of a protest camp in the capital earlier this month, as the ruling military council failed to announce the findings of its own investigation on Saturday as promised.

He added that the investigation launched against Bashir for the charges had been completed.

Talks between the protesters and the Transitional Military Council (TMC) broke down after the violence.

The top United States diplomat to Africa says there needs to be an "independent and credible" investigation into the Sudanese military's violent dispersal of a protest camp in Khartoum last week.

The rapes were allegedly carried out by members of the Rapid Support Forces paramilitaries, notoriously brutal militia with roots in the conflict in the western Darfur region of Sudan, which began in 2003.

"We are working hard to take those who did this to the gallows", Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, deputy chief of the ruling military council said in a speech broadcast live on state television.

Doctors linked to the protest movement say about 120 people have been killed in Khartoum since the crackdown, while the health ministry says 61 people died nationwide on 3 June. "They made a plan and implemented it. but we regret that some mistakes happened", spokesperson Shamseddine Kabbashi said.

Brig Abderrahim Badreddine, spokesman for the investigative committee, said initial findings showed "officers and soldiers of different ranks from regular forces entered the sit-in without any orders from their superiors".

Bashir swept to power in an Islamist-backed coup in 1989.

Sudan suffered high rates of corruption during his rule, ranking 172 out of 180 countries in Transparency International's 2018 Corruption Perceptions Index.
