Chandrayaan-2 gets closer to moon, completes second orbit raising manoeuvre

Over the next few days, mission controllers will use Chandrayaan-2's onboard propulsion system to perform a series of orbital adjustments.

With this effort, the spacecraft was pushed to an orbit of 251 X 54,829 kilometres, it said.

The second orbit raising manoeuvre is scheduled in the early hours of July 26 at about 1 am.

India on Monday (July 22) launched its spacecraft using its most powerful rocket, the Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle Mark III (GSLV Mk-III) from Satish Dhawan space centre in Andhra Pradesh's Sriharikota.

The spacecraft was originally supposed to take off on July 15, but it was aborted just 56 minutes before the launch after suffering a technical glitch. The Chandrayaan 2 was successfully launched by ISRO into space and has started its journey to the moon and even Bollywood celebs celebrated.

The ISRO said the Trans Lunar Insertion of Chandrayaan-2 is scheduled on August 14, 2019, which will send the spacecraft to moon.

In a giant leap for the country's ambitious low-priced space programme, ISRO has undertaken the most complex and its prestigious mission ever aimed at landing the rover on the moon.

The lunar South Pole is especially interesting because the area remains in shadows and is much larger than its North Pole.

The Indian space agency said the major activities include earth bound maneuvers, Trans Lunar Insertion, Lunar bound maneuvers, the lander Vikram separation from Chandrayaan-2 and Vikram touch down on the moon's South Pole.

If successful, India will become just the fourth country in the world to land a spacecraft on the Moon, the others being the USA, the Soviet Union, and China. In its latest tweet, ISRO said that the mission is scheduled to reach the Moon on August 20, despite its launch schedule was reworked. "The Man Who Sold the Moon" raises money to land a rocket there, by marketing giant advertising billboards, setting up broadcasting stations for TV networks, offering diamond-mining concessions, and so on.
