Former Springboks pay tribute to James Small

Brett Gosper, CEO of World Rugby, said: Very sad to hear the news of former Springbok James Small - the man who, among other achievements, marked Jonah Lomu during South Africa's victorious and iconic 1995 Rugby World Cup Final.

Small made his debut for the Springboks against New Zealand in Johannesburg in 1992 and played in 47 Tests until 1997, scoring 20 Test tries.

World Cup-winning South Africa wing James Small has died from a suspected heart attack aged 50.

Small is the third member of the world champion team to pass away after loose forward Ruben Kruger succumbed to brain cancer in 2010 and halfback Joost van der Westhuizen died after a long battle with motor neurone disease two years ago.

Tributes were pouring in for Springboks rugby legend James Small on Wednesday.

He died in hospital in Johannesburg and was planning to make his way home to his 14-year-old daughter Ruby.

Mark Alexander, the president of SA Rugby, has shared his condolences with Small's family and friends.

He represented the Lions (formerly Transvaal), Sharks and Western Province at provincial level.

Known for his aggressive style of play, Small was the first South African to be sent off in a test when it was rare in rugby, banished in a match against Australia in 1993.

Meanwhile, fellow World Cup-winner Chester Williams accused Small of racial abuse while the pair were teammates.

The South African government and members of the country's rugby fraternity took to social media to mourn the death of Small.
