Leaked UK Memo Says Trump Axed Iran Deal to Spite Obama

Leaked UK Memo Says Trump Axed Iran Deal to Spite Obama

As well as a government investigation into the leaks, police are also looking into a potential breach of the Official Secrets Act.

The criticism led the Ambassador to step down on Wednesday, saying it was "impossible" for him to continue.

London police are launching an official investigation into the leak of diplomatic cables that resulted in the United Kingdom ambassador to the U.S. resigning his post over describing the Trump administration in disparaging terms.

The Mail on Sunday published details of the dispatch from Kim Darroch, despite a warning from Scotland Yard that journalists who released further details of the ambassador's communications could be in breach of the Officials Secrets Act (OSA).

Kim Darroch called the move "diplomatic vandalism" while he was still serving as the ambassador and said that the USA appeared to have no follow-up strategy, the Mail on Sunday reported, citing leaked cables and briefing notes.

President Trump hit back and denounced him as a "very stupid guy" and a "pompous fool", vowing he would never work with him in his position as ambassador.

The government had already opened an internal inquiry into the publication of the memos leaked to the Mail newspaper on July 7.

Other newspaper editors and MPs were also critical of Mr Basu's statement.

The latest publication comes after Scotland Yard warned journalists that any further publication of the ambassador's emails could be a criminal offence and the documents should be returned to the government.

"However, you are now also responsible for diverting busy detectives from undertaking their core mission", Basu said, adding that anyone with information about the alleged leak or those responsible should contact the police.

Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt, who is jousting with Boris Johnson to become Britain's next prime minister, tweeted Saturday that the person responsible for the leak must be found and held responsible, but he differed with police over whether the publication of leaks is a possible crime.

Mr Basu said police have "no intention of seeking to prevent editors from publishing stories in the public interest in a liberal democracy".

The Mail on Sunday, which first obtained the trove of leaked memos, has not faced any legal repercussions for its decision to publish. US President Donald Trump Touts His Record on Environment, Says "I Will Ensure America Has Cleanest Air, Water".

"In response, a Foreign Office spokesman called it a "totally unacceptable leak" of "sensitive material" and called for the source of the leak to "face the consequences of their actions".

"It's not news that the United States and UK differ in how to ensure Iran is never able to acquire a nuclear weapon; but this does underline that we do not shy away from talking about our differences and working together".

"This isn't Russian Federation", he asked the Metropolitan Police on Twitter.

The ambassador indicated his decision to resign was influenced by Johnson's refusal, since he is overwhelmingly likely to be the next prime minister.

"He added: "This undermining of the public service has been going on for years and is clearly going to be a fundamental problem in the period ahead".
