Massive Power Outage Cripples Parts Of New York City

Media reports indicate that thousands are without power in parts of Midtown Manhattan and the Upper West Side.

Saturday's outage occurred on the 42nd anniversary of a NY blackout that crippled the city during a heat wave on July 13, 1977.

A reporter with the New York Times said that the buildings were blacked out, but some of the electrical billboards are back on as of 8:00 p.m.

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio left his presidential campaign stop in Iowa to return to the city as the news broke.

At Rockefeller Center, traffic lights were out. "I am so sorry that this happened", she said. The blackout also affected a number of Broadway productions including "Harry Potter and the Cursed Child", "Hadestown", "Lion King", "Ain't Too Proud", "To Kill a Mockingbird", and "The Cher Show", which were all canceled.

New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo said he was sending 100 State Police officers and some National Guard troops to the city to help with traffic control.

Lights were on in the east direction of Times Square but off on the west side.

The city's subway system said it was receiving reports of power outages in station complexes on "multiple lines" throughout Manhattan.

"40K without power is Armageddon", he wrote on Twitter.

Jeff O'Malley said he was stuck in a subway vehicle for more than an hour.

'From what we're seeing at this moment, this is simply a mechanical problem and one, again, that sounds like it is addressable in a reasonable period of time, ' de Blasio said.

The New York City Council speaker, Corey Johnson, said on Twitter that there had been a "major disturbance" at Con Edison's 49th Street substation, and that the utility was working to fix it.

"We were stuck for about 75 minutes", Jeff O'Malley, 57, told Reuters news agency.
