New York City Power Outage Leaves 38000 Without Electricity

The power outages caused the Metropolitan Transportation Authority to stop train services in Manhattan and left several businesses in the dark.

Fadela Elferdaousy, 42, of Queens, was stranded at the Columbus Circle subway station.

Mayor Bill de Blasio told CNN said he had spoken with the police commissioner and the deputy commissioner who handles counterterrorism. The MTA urged residents "to avoid below-ground subway stations" until Con Edison could restore power.

ConEd says there are 42,000 without power on the west side of Manhattan.

Parts of midtown Manhattan in New York City were hit with a power outage on Saturday evening, causing Times Square billboards and to go dark, disrupting subway service and cutting out traffic lights. NYPD and @FDNY are continuing to respond to calls in the area, thank you for your patience. There was also "smoke in multiple buildings" on the West Side, the department said, and it was responding to "numerous" reports of people stuck in elevators.

A power failure in NY has halted subway trains and trapped people in lifts.

The outage was having a widespread effect, with the NY subway system also experiencing power outages in its stations, the agency managing the trains said.

While trains are still running despite the outage, the stations without power are being bypassed by trains until power is restored.

Power reportedly went out early Saturday evening (NYT).

The outage occurred on the 42nd anniversary of a NY blackout that crippled almost the entire city during a heat wave on July 13, 1977.

Power company ConEdison confirmed the blackout: "We are responding to extensive outages on the Westside of Manhattan".

Another user posted a photo showing a man at 66th Street and Broadway directing traffic.

Police officers and civilians worked together to direct traffic while firetrucks and ambulances screamed down side streets.
