Police Search For Children Who Drove 4WD From Queensland To NSW

They took fishing rods and money with them, and one even left their family a note to them them he was leaving.

The vehicle was found on Sunday night near Grafton, in the neighbouring state of New South Wales, about 11 hours' drive from Rockhampton.

The children, a 12-year-old girl, two 13-year-old boys from Queensland and a 14-year-old boy originally from Grafton, were found in the stolen Nissan Patrol parked off the Gwydir Highway at Jackadgery.

Police said one of the kids had left a goodbye note for their family.

A 900km cross-border road trip has ended overnight after four northern Queensland children were found taking a joyride in a family 4WD.

It is likely charges will be laid, but police have not yet had the chance to interview the children, which can be done only in the presence of their parents.

Early on Sunday, about 140km into their journey, the group stopped at a service station in the town of Banana and allegedly stole petrol.

"He is really short".

Speaking to the media in Coffs Harbour this morning, Coffs/Clarence Acting Inspector Darren Williams said police tracked down the location of the children through one of their mobile phones.

Four runaway children, including a 10-year-old girl, went on an epic 1 000-kilometre road trip in a stolen auto across Australia before police intervened, officials said Monday.

Williams said they possibly shared the driving. A non-stop trip between Gracemere and Grafton would typically take about 10 hours.

"It's a pretty big journey, and a long way for a young person", he said.

Motorists must be aged 17 or older to be eligible for a licence in Queensland and New South Wales.
